Stenhousemuir 2-0 Albion Rovers

Stenhousemuir 2-0 Albion Rovers

Albion Rovers boss Brian Reid conceded his side gave away ‘two gifts’ on Saturday afternoon as they lost 2-0 to Stenhousemuir at Ochilview on cinch League 2 duty.

Despite a strong first-half showing in front of a healthy away support, a quick-fire double from the Warriors sealed the three points for Gary Naysmith’s outfit.

Nat Wedderburn was given all the time in the world to fire home from outside the box on 49 minutes, with the midfielder taking advantage of the backline not engaging quickly enough.

Then only three minutes later, Ross Forbes’ reverse pass caught out the Rovers backline, with Matty Yates scoring past Jack Leighfield.

“It only went wrong for us at the start of the second half,” Reid said. “We lost the match in a ten-minute spell. The first one was a terrible goal to lose – the goalkeeper made a great save and we let Nat Wedderburn have all the time in the world to pick his spot.

“He isn’t a prolific goalscorer but it is criminal to defend like that. You have to get out quickly and it was way too passive.

“The second goal was just as bad. The ball in behind catches us out and the boy scores. It was two gifts.

“Our first half was excellent. They didn’t get in our half at all and we had to score a couple of goals in that period. We were a little bit careless in front of goal.

“At the break, we warned them that although the performance was good, we had to keep going and that the match wasn’t a given.

“The reaction after the break wasn’t good enough. Goals change games and they gained a lift when they scored the first goal, we gifted them the victory.

“If we scored in that first half period, I am sure we would have gone on to put in another performance like the ones at Bonnyrigg or Stranraer.”

During the match, Motherwell loanee Ewan Wilson was forced off with a nasty injury to compound Rovers misery on the day.

“Ewan was taken to hospital,” Reid added. “His ankle was swollen badly. We don’t know what will happen yet and it is a big blow – Ewan is a top young player and he has been exceptional for us this season.

“We haven’t had much luck with injuries this season. We are happy to have Euan (Mutale) with us now and he adds to the group.

“We are still thin on numbers.”

Next up for Rovers is a crucial home match against Elgin City on Tuesday night at the Reigart Stadium.
