Rovers still in hunt for play-offs after victory over Forfar

Rovers fight for promotion glory via the play-offs has gone to the final day of the season courtesy of a well-earned three points at home to Forfar.

It was the worst possible start for Rovers, the away side taking the lead inside the opening minute when Danny Denholm raced through on goal, before firing past Ross Stewart and into the net.

It didn’t take long for Rovers to get back on level terms however, a defensive mix-up between the Forfar defence and goalkeeper seeing Ally Love firing into an empty net from close-range.

Showing a great deal of character, just before the twenty minute mark Rovers took the lead, Ally Love again the catalyst, whipping a stunning ball onto the head of Scott McBride, whose headed effort flew into the back of the net.

Rovers continued to look largely comfortable and in control of the match for the remainder of the first-half and just after the break, however, missed chances proved costly just before the hour, when Forfar’s Andy Ryan equalised from the spot, Alan Reid judged to have fouled Denhold inside the box.

With 15 minutes remaining and a draw looking ever likely, up popped Mick Dunlop, who slammed home a pin-point header from Ally Love’s superb looping corner.

Despite the visitors being awarded a free-kick in a dangerous position deep into extra-time, Rovers held on for the three points, ensuring a dramatic final day of the season next weekend.
