Match Preview: Partick Thistle

Albion Rovers vs Partick Thistle

Betfred Cup Group Stage, Match 3

Cliftonhill Stadium, Coatbridge

Tuesday 24th July, 19.45pm

Our last game ended in a spirited 2-0 defeat, Ayr United provided the opposition in what was our first competitive home game with John Brogan at the helm.

The visitors started the game the brightest and opened the scoring after 8 minutes, Alan Forrest scoring into an open net after ‘Rovers keeper Gareth Hallford made a great save to deny Lawrence Shankland. The next goal would come on 80 minutes, Ayr were well marshalled throughout the game and it was a much-improved performance from the Stenhousemuir defeat, however, Steven Bell lost his marker from the corner and drove a header into the net to seal the 3 points for the away team in which was a deserved victory.

John Brogan gave his thoughts after the game…

“I was really pleased with the effort and work rate of the players.”

“We competed well in the first half and against a full-time team we did struggle more in the second.”

“Our young players gave a good account of themselves, we put some good balls in the box, but just had nobody up there to get on the end of them.”

Admission for tonight’s match is:

Adults £12

Concessions £6

U16s £3

Season tickets are not valid for these games and proof of age is required for under 16s

The visitors come to Cliftonhill with a maximum points tally so far in the group stage. Wins against Morton and Stenhousemuir leave them second to Ayr United on goal difference. The Jags won their last game with a nervous ending after a poor second-half performance at Firhill, newly signed forward Jack Storer is one to watch having opened his senior account with a screamer, driving in a fantastic volley into the top corner.

Alan Archibald played down the idea of the match ‘being an easy game’ for the visitors in the media, commenting that he saw a much-improved performance from the ‘Rovers on Saturday and that it is hard to prepare playing against a team with an unknown quality.
