Albion Rovers v Clyde – Betfred Cup – Preview

Kick-off: 19:45

Where: Exsel Group Stadium

This evening we welcome Barry Ferguson’s Clyde FC to the Exsel Group Stadium, in our last home game of the Betfred Cup Group Stages.

It’s been a fairly solid start to the newly-established cup format, picking up two draws, picking up two points for draws and a further bonus point for a tough penalty shootout victory in Berwick.

Our promising start sees us still very much in contention to progress into the next stages of the cup – sitting joint second with Premiership side Kilmarnock – however, if we are to continue in the cup, victory on Tuesday night is essential.

We caught up with player/manager Darren Young ahead of the clash with Clyde.

“The Betfred Cup has certainly provided real excitement so far.

“I think a lot of teams have been using it to get up to speed with match fitness and sharpness for the coming league season, however, the introduction of penalties and group stages has allowed supporters to be more excited about it and for players to come up against tough opponents early on.

“We watched Clyde on the Saturday, where they beat Berwick Rangers on penalties. They have got a really strong squad this year and should be up challenging again for the title this campaign.

“Also, they’ll provide a real threat in attack, with Peter McDonald leading the line. If given half a chance Peter has the quality to punish you.”

The coaching staff will have a near enough full strength squad to pick from other than Paul Archibald. With the Kilmarnock game drawing ever-closer, some would suggest that the starting eleven should be rotated, but Young suggests that, as always, he’ll make the decisions that are most likely to see his team come away with the three points.

“We may make a few changes to give some guys a little bit more game time, but believe me, we’re going out to collect all three points.”
